The balance pipes are some of the easiest pieces of equipment to make. For these, I headed over to the plumbing/PVC area of Home Depot and had one of the associates cut some pipe for me. The book recommends 4" diameter pipe for most people, though if your feet are larger than most, you may need the 6" pipe.

At any rate, Home Depot only sells the 4" pipe in 10-foot long sections — viz. you have to purchase the whole shebang. Luckily, it will only set you back $8 or so. I had two 2-foot long sections cut off of the end, as you can see in the picture below. I lugged the leftovers home for any unexcpected PVC needs :)
