Remodel-Style Recessed Can Lights

Remodel-Style Recessed Can Lights

This is a good picture of the two different types of recessed can lights you can purchase. The first, shown in the last picture and here where there is no drywall are what you would find in new construction and no-drywall situations. These are designed to be installed between rafters or joists and can be positioned after securing their "legs" to the wood frame of the ceiling.

The second kind, shown in the foreground, are the type used in remodelling situations. These lights are ingenious. They come with a circular template with which you cut out (using a rat-tail saw) a portion of ceiling drywall. (The main caveat here is that you have to be sure that there are no joists where you hole will be.) After that is done and the can is wired, you simply slide the fixture into the hole, and it secures itself against the surrounding drywall. These fixtures weigh so little and do not support any other weight, so the simple can-to-drywall stabilization system is more than enough.
