New Phone Line

New Phone Line

This was one of the more interesting things to transpire during the project. The old phone line and jack were located on the right exterior wall, basically where the new kitchen sink will be going. So, working with the help of the electrician, I decided that it needed to be moved.

The new phone line and jack will be located on the back wall of the kitchen, towards the left-hand side. It will be directly next to the large, upright pantry-style IKEA cabinet.

In order to move the phone line, we first disconnected the existing jack. Since the old jack was 8 or 10 feet further from the city connection than this new location, we were able to re-route the existing line to a new location. Here, you see two circular holes, created using a hole drilling bit in a normal drill. Then, using an auger bit at the most extreme angle possible through the bottom hole, a new hole was drilled through the header wood. Finally, the existing phone line was fished through the hole in the header, down into the back wall.

This method was great because it provided access to the phone line from above the header (top hole) and below the header in the wall (bottom hole). We were able to use fish tape to fish the line down the back wall and into the new jack.

And what makes this method even better is that I kept the drywall cutouts that the drill left behind — I was later able to use them to repair the drywall holes!
